Technology
What is HOD UV (Hydro-Optic Disinfection)?
HOD™ UV is Atlantium's medium-pressure UV technology. Water flows through a quartz disinfection chamber surrounded by an air block, so UV light is trapped and reflected many times inside the chamber (total internal reflection). The long light path gives a uniform UV dose across the whole flow while using less electrical power than conventional medium-pressure UV systems.
What is the difference between medium-pressure and low-pressure UV?
Medium-pressure lamps are shorter and more powerful and emit a broad germicidal spectrum. According to Atlantium, this prevents microbial photo-repair, is more efficient for virus inactivation, and in some cases 2–4 medium-pressure lamps replace more than 50 low-pressure lamps. Lamp output is also not affected by water temperature.
How is the UV dose guaranteed?
Each HOD UV system measures lamp output and water UV transmittance (UVT) with separate sensors. The controller automatically adjusts lamp power between 25 and 100% so that the minimum UV dose set for the application is always delivered, and logs dose, flow and UVT for compliance reporting.
Applications
Can UV replace chlorine for water disinfection?
Yes. HOD UV is accepted by regulators as an alternative to chlorine for primary water disinfection. It adds nothing to the water, forms no disinfection by-products and does not change taste, odour or mineral balance. It is effective against chlorine-resistant organisms such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Pseudomonas.
Can UV remove chlorine and chloramines (dechlorination)?
Yes. HOD UV reduces free chlorine and chloramines to undetectable levels. It is used as an alternative to activated carbon filters or sodium bisulfite dosing, for example ahead of RO membranes and in beverage production lines.
How does UV protect RO membranes?
A UV system before the RO unit inactivates the bacteria that form biofilm on the membranes. This reduces biofouling, the number of CIP cleanings and energy use, and extends membrane life.
Which industries use Atlantium HOD UV?
Beverage and bottled water, breweries, dairy, aquaculture (RAS, hatcheries), biopharma (PW and WFI), municipal drinking water and reuse, and industrial water: cooling water, boiler feed water, heat exchanger and intake protection against biofouling and mussels.
Equipment & sizing
Which Atlantium models are available?
The RZ-series covers flows from about 1 m³/h (RS104) to 1000 m³/h (EP600): RS104, RZ104, RZ163, RZ300, RZB300, EP600 and RZM350. All reactors are made of AISI 316 stainless steel. Specifications are on the Equipment page.
What information is needed to size a UV system?
Flow rate (minimum, nominal, maximum), water UV transmittance (UVT), the application and the target UV dose or log reduction, plus pipe size and operating pressure. Send these to info@atlantis-uv.com and we reply with a sized system and a budget price.
How often do UV lamps need replacing?
Medium-pressure lamps in Atlantium systems are typically replaced at around 6,000 operating hours. The controller records operating hours for each lamp. Quartz sleeves are checked at service visits and replaced when needed.
